Dr Rama Vancheeswaran

MBBS MSc (Immunology) PhD FRCP

Dr Vancheeswaran (known to almost everyone as 'Rama') trained in Respiratory Medicine following a successful career in medical research, culminating in the award of a PhD from the University of London in 1995. She trained extensively in the investigation and management of complex lung disease, undertaking placements in the Royal Brompton, St Mary's, Harefield and Hammersmith hospitals as part of her post graduate specialist training. 

Following her post graduate training she worked at Barnet hospital and the Royal Free hospital from 2006 to 2018, where she developed a complex Interstitial Lung disease service, a community integrated COPD service, led on the development and running of a sleep medicine service and was Associate Medical Director and Clinical Director for Medicine. 

In 2019 Dr Vancheeswaran moved to West Hertfordshire Hospitals Trust where she continues her interests in general respiratory medicine and Interstitial lung diseases and has worked closely with Dr Matthew Knight and Dr Andrew Barlow on the establishment and evaluation of virtual clinics and improved care for patients with respiratory diseases in the A and E and Acute medicine departments. 



Dr Vancheeswaran also holds an honoary consultant post at the Royal Brompton hospital in Interstitial Lung diseases and is a member of the British Thoracic Society COPD Specialist Advisory Group.

  • Interstitial Lung diseases (Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, Sarcoidosis and other interstitial diseases) 

  • COPD and Asthma 

  • Lung Cancer 

  • Cough and Breathlessness 

  • Clinical hypnosis and psychology of behavioural change in illness- with an interest in smoking cessation and weight loss

  • Recurrent Respiratory Tract infections.  



Dr Vancheeswaran has been actively involved in medical research in to respiratory and autoimmune disease for over 30 years. As well as being actively involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching she has published extensively. Below are a list of external publications and articles.
